The course is highly participatory and is complete with live snakes and snake identification techniques.
Here is a sampling of what we teach:

Rattlesnake DO’s and DON’TS
DO’s

Keep your hands and feet where you can see them (If you step on a snake, expect a defensive bite)

Be aware at all times when in rattlesnake territory (A snake’s first defense is to “freeze” to avoid detection)

Carry a long walking stick (Use to make sure there are not snakes in tall weeds or brush)

Carry a flashlight (You never know when you may need to be out at night and snakes can be nocturnal)

Observe a snake from a safe distance (Snakes can strike 1/3 – 1/2 their body length and can move while striking)

Wear long, loose fitting pants (Some or all of the venom of a bite may not make it through the pants)

Wear thick, over-the-ankle boots (many bites occur to the ankle or foot)

Step on rocks or logs (snakes naturally keep to the edges of things and you may step on one if you step over)

DON’Ts

Attempt to catch, kill, or otherwise handle a rattlesnake (Many completely avoidable bites have resulted from this and an untrained person should avoid contact with any dangerous animal)

Assume that a snake is not a rattlesnake if it has no rattle (Rattlesnakes have no rattle when first born and rattles can break off or be bitten off by other animals)

Assume that no snakes are present if the weather is not hot (Snakes may be briefly active in every month of the year and more so in Southern California)

Run from a snake (Rattlesnakes strike fast but slither much slower than a human can move and running in a panic could result in an accident such as stepping on another snake)

Reach into dark places or walk in tall grass (Snakes are naturally secretive and may be present where you can’t see them)

Hike alone (Too many reasons to mention)

If Bitten:

Get to a hospital as soon as safely possible (antivenom is the best treatment for venomous snake bites)

Remain inactive and avoid any unnecessary physical activity, DO NOT RUN (slower heart rate = slower venom circulation)

Stay calm (less than 1% of bites are fatal and keeping calm will keep your blood pressure from spreading the venom faster)

Remove any restrictive jewelry or clothing (massive swelling may occur and blood flow may be cut off)

Watch out for shock and lie flat, elevate feet, and keep warm if signs of shock are present

Do not cut over the bite and attempt to suck out the poison (this only works in the movies and can complicate the wound)

Do not tourniquet or constrict blood flow (restricting the venom to one area may result in the loss of a limb)

Do not soak the area in ice water (this does nothing for the wound but may complicate shock or cause frostbite)

Do not try to catch or kill the snake for identification (it’s dangerous and unnecessary for rattlesnake antivenom treatment)

For more information contact Nathan at info@reptile-removal.com And here in my stomping grounds of the San Diego area we have an abundance of habitat that our notorious native rattlesnakes thrive in. There are 6 species of rattlesnake in Southern California: The Southern Pacific Rattlesnake (Crotalus oreganus helleri),

A Southern Pacific Rattlesnake (Crotalus oreganus helleri) in San Diego County

the Red Diamond Rattlesnake (Crotalus rubber),

2 adult Red Diamond Rattlesnakes in San Diego County

the Speckled Rattlesnake (Crotalus mitchellii),

A Juvenile Speckled Rattlesnake (Crotalus mitchellii) in San Diego County

the Mojave Rattlesnake (Crotalus scutulatus), the Sidewinder Rattlesnake (Crotalus cerastes)

A Sidewinder Rattlesnake (Crotalus cerastes) spreading its ribcage to appear larger

and the Western Diamondback Rattlesnake (Crotalus atrox).

An Adult Western Diamondback Rattlesnake (Crotalus atrox) on the road at night.

While the Western Diamondback, the Mojave, and the Sidewinders are primarily confined to the desert areas of So Cal, the Southern Pacific Rattlesnake which prefers grasslands, hills, and wooded areas is extremely abundant in the highly populated areas near our large cities such as San Diego and Los Angeles. And the Red Diamond Rattlesnake is also very commonly encountered in just about any boulder strewn or rocky habitat in the region. The Speckled Rattlesnake is also a rock dweller, but its secretive habits and cryptic camouflage cause it to be encountered far less than the other species.
While more and more people are drawn to the rural areas of coastal and inland Southern California and even the seemingly inhospitable deserts of the region are quickly becoming meccas of human activity, contact with native reptiles is inevitable. While most Rattlesnakes would much prefer to hide from large mammals like humans or to “freeze” completely motionless and rely on their camouflage than to defend themselves, the fact remains that all rattlesnakes have the ability to strike any human who ventures too close with potentially lethal consequences for the victim. Of course all Rattlesnakes are venomous and each species has its own unique cocktail of harmful proteins that constitute its venom. The hemotoxic, neurotoxic, and cytotoxic components vary from one species to the next and can even be distinct to specific populations. Yet the danger involved in coming into contact with these serpents most often results in man destroying animal, not the other way around, although I do not believe it has to be this way. Personally, I love snakes and I have a healthy respect for them and the vital role that they play in the ecosystem, but when human lives are at stake, removing a dangerous animal from a dangerous situation is often the only logical course of action.

In many cases a frightened resident or business owner has seen a snake in a dangerous situation and then loses sight of the animal. Animal control may eventually show up and if the animal is in view they will do their best to remove it and then release it nearby. We take great care and time in searching for and locating any threat or potentially dangerous animal and then we relocate reptiles to a safe distance where it will not return. So if you saw a snake in your garage last week and you want to be completely sure if its gone, give us a call.

http://www.reptile-removal.com/
Email: info@reptile-removal.com
Phone: (619) 905-2524

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; The snakes and lizards are gearing up to emerge in a mass of slithering and crawling scales and tails at any moment. Well, not really. Here in Southern California temperatures never really dip down low enough long enough to create true hibernation of reptiles (with the possible exception of some of our mountain dwelling herps) but activity is stunted during the colder months of the year and that is about to change. As we have longer periods of warm days and somewhat warm nights, reptiles (especially snakes) will be lulled from their slightly dormant states beneath the ground and begin to search the area for food, water, and potential mates. These ectothermic creatures rely on the surrounding environment to produce enough heat to keep them active and digest any food. It is during this time in Southern California (late March through late May) that most encounters between man and reptile occur. If heat is such a big factor then why is movement not peaked during the summer? Because these creatures for the most part are also highly dependant on the availability of moisture and in this part of the country there is very little moisture to be found naturally in the ground during the summer months. Note that when the earth is a rich brown color there will be much more snake activity than when it has become pale brown. It is the combination of moisture and temperature that make the spring a great time for snakes to be out and about. It is also a great time for Reptile Removal to be out and about. This is when we can be most effective at reducing the population of rattlesnakes or other unwanted reptiles around your home or business by continually searching the area. Let us design a weekly or monthly program to service your home or business.
And as always Law Enforcement, Animal Control officers, property managers and constuction project managers our services are here to assist you as well.
Please visit our website: http://www.reptile-removal.com/
Email: info@reptile-removal.com
Phone (619) 905-2524

Photographic Reptile and Amphibian Identification Abums

Southern California Rattlesnake Identification / Reptile and Amphibian Identification

I just wanted to let everyone know that the photographic identification albums on our Reptile Removal Facebook page have been updated to include nearly all of the reptiles and amphibians of Southern California. We have provided these as a resource so if you have a reptile or amphibian on your property you can search through the photos and correctly identify the animal in question before giving us a call if needed. The albums are separated into amphibians, turtles, lizards, and snakes. You will find them on the lower left of the homepage.
Our Facebook Page:
http://www.facebook.com/pages/San-Diego-CA/Reptile-Removal/184984939470
Please keep in mind that the rattlesnakes are the only dangerous reptiles native to the region, other than the Gila Monster Lizard that barely ranges into extreme Eastern California. However, occasionally an exotic pet will escape and could potentially be dangerous, so if you are unable to identify a snake or lizard, leave it alone. And although most reptiles and amphibians are not dangerous, I must warn you that some can deliver a painful bite.
And just in case you have not been to the It is inevitable that the ever growing human populace encounters wildlife as it engulfs the wild. It is our goal to minimize these encounters by safely relocating reptiles or other animals from rural dwellings and businesses to protected environments.

Although certain government agencies will provide this service, such as California Fish and Game, animal control, or your local Fire Department, it may take several days before they respond and often the animal involved meets a grim fate. We never harm the animals involved and we guarantee service to anywhere in San Diego County within 24 hours of contact and can usually be on site within a few hours. We also regularly service Imperial County and are available by appointment in Riverside, Orange, and San Bernardino Counties. We will do our best to get service quickly anywhere in Southern California.

We specialize in snake removal and control, here in Southern California that mostly means rattlesnake removal and control. There are six rattlesnake species native to the region, but we will remove nonvenomous reptiles, introduced species, escaped pets, birds, bats, other small mammals, insects, and arachnids as well. In addition to responding to problem animal calls of nuisance snakes or other nuisance wildlife, we provide property inspections and offer plans to reduce the current and future populations of venomous or otherwise problematic species. Our wildlife control methods often consist of snake relocation or other reptile relocation by continually collecting reptiles from your property and releasing them in uninhabited areas. In the case of bird, bat, or other small mammal removals; the animal is removed from harms way and released.
website: http://www.reptile-removal.com/
email: info@reptile-removal.com
phone: (619) 905-2524

San Diego Snake Removal

http://www.reptile-removal.com/

San Diego Snake Removal Southern California Snake Removal

You have reached the blogosphere of Southern California’s premiere snake removal specialists, Reptile Removal™

Removal of a Southern Pacific Rattlesnake in San Diego, CA

Here was a removal of an adult Southern Pacific Rattlesnake from beneath a cabinet in a homeowner’s kitchen near San Diego, CA. It is centered in San Diego California where I currently reside. I have had nearly two decades of field experience catching and working with reptiles and I was handling venomous Copperheads (Agkistrodon contortrix) and Timber Rattlesnakes (Crotalus horridus) by the age of 11. At the age of 21, I moved from Oklahoma to Southern California and immediately began to explore the wilderness here, systematically locating each native and introduced species of reptile and amphibian and I have a field guide in the works to this effect. This company arose from necessity after witnessing many animals needlessly slaughtered by nervous landowners and outdoor enthusiasts. I believe that reptiles are a necessary part of the ecosystem to be revered and appreciated and there are better ways to deal with nuisance or problem animals than by their extermination.

While many species of snake and lizard are found here, there are only a handful of snake species that are dangerously venomous in this area and there are no venomous lizards native here. In fact, there are only a few venomous species of lizard in the world, the Gila Monster (Heloderma suspectum), the Mexican Beaded Lizard (Heloderma horridum), and recently a few species of monitor lizard have been added to the venomous list. But here in Southern California, rattlesnakes are the only native snakes that a landowner or business owner should be concerned about. In Southern California there are six native rattlesnake species; the Southern Pacific Rattlesnake (Crotalus oreganus helleri), The Red Diamond Rattlesnake (Crotalus rubber), the Speckled Rattlesnake (Crotalus mitchelli), the Western Diamondback Rattlesnake (Crotalus atrox), the Mojave Rattlesnake (Crotalus scutulatus), and the Sidewinder Rattlesnake (Crotalus cerastes). Although these snakes have a painful and in some cases potentially lethal bite, these animals would rather escape than attack and if handled correctly they can be safely removed from your property and relocated to protected habitat. There are also many ways in which the population of rattlesnakes or other problematic species can be reduced and controlled without killing a single animal or negatively affecting the ecosystem.
Finding a snake or other reptile on your property or in your home can be a very alarming situation for those untrained or unfamiliar with such animals. Reptile Removal will respond to any reptile or amphibian related emergency within the service area. In addition to removing the unwanted reptile, we can search the property and remove other reptiles, devise a plan to regularly service your home or property and continually reduce the number of unwanted reptiles, and perform minor habitat alteration to make the property less desirable or in some cases incapable of supporting a large population of the reptile in question.

REPTILE REMOVAL IS NOW REMOVING OTHER TYPES OF WILDLIFE! Due to the amount of emails and phone calls requesting assistance with non-reptilian animal situations, we have decided to remove other nuisance wildlife. You can call Reptile Removal for birds, bats, other small mammals, insects, or arachnids that need to be removed.

Please visit our website at: Reptile Removal™ is expanding our services! Due to the amount of phone calls and emails that we are receiving of non-reptilian or amphibian situations, we have decided to remove problematic or nuisance birds, insects, arachnids, and small mammals too! It seems many people don’t even know what a reptile is! There are also many emergency situations when animal control is closed or unavailable and we receive the call. We have now responded to bird and bat calls and we have extensive experience in dealing with a wide range of other animals including many spider and scorpion species, opossums, raccoons, foxes, skunks, wildcats, rabbits, squirrels, gophers, moles, shrews, beavers, and even armadillos. Now you can call Reptile Removal for all your nuisance wildlife problems! We will continue to perform removals and relocations when possible for all animals involved. However we are not entering in to the extermination business and will not eradicate large populations of rodents or infestations of roaches, etc. and we will not be using pesticides. As always, our goal will be to ensure the safety of the people and animals involved and to minimize the probability of future encounters. So the next time you find a squirrel in your chimney or bats and opossums in the attic, just give Reptile Removal a call. Look for an update coming to the website soon!
Thanks!
Nathan Hutcherson
Reptile Removal™ Founder
www.reptile-removal.com
(619) 905-2524

Rates

Reptile-Removal.com

Rates

Service

Price

Call response / Initial property inspection

$100.00

Follow up visit

$75.00

Snake (or other animal) removal (1-2 Snakes)

$50.00

3+ Snakes (No limit)

$100.00

Subfloor crawl spaces or attic removals/ inspections

$30.00

Reptile population reduction habitat alteration in 2008.
In fact, there are only a few venomous species of lizard in the world, the Gila Monster (Heloderma suspectum) and the Mexican Beaded Lizard (Heloderma horridum) and recently a few species of monitor lizard have been added to the list. Rattlesnakes are the only native snakes in this area that a landowner should be concerned about.

Recently Reptile Removal has been receiving phone calls and emails requesting the removal of non-reptile and non-amphibian animals, such as birds, bats, insects, arachnids, and small mammals. And yes we do also remove any such animals from harms way and release them for the same fee listed for snake removal.

Please Visit our website: http://www.reptile-removal.com/
Email: info@reptile-removal.com
Phone: (619) 905-2524
